History[]
Sam was wingsuiting with his friend, Kwame, in Sun Valley, Idaho, when he attempted to go through a two meter hole. He missed, resulting in him hitting a granite wall. He was taken to Boise General, but they didn't have the resources to treat him, so they placed a chest tube and transferred him to Grey Sloan Memorial. He had broken all his limbs in multiple places, plus his pelvis, ribs, and spine. At Grey Sloan, he had more scans, which diagnosed 93 fractures throughout his body. Link wanted to do staged repair, in which he operated on one area at a time, fixing that break and then moving on. It would involve more surgeries over a greater period of time, but would save him the prolonged time under anesthesia. Sam disliked this plan, wanting to get back on his feet sooner than later and avoid the risk of eventual amputation of any of his limbs, so Owen proposed a longer surgery in which all the limbs would be repaired. Sam liked that idea, so Link created a surgical plan involving a large team of surgeons working together. The surgery was successful and Sam was stable in the ICU afterward. ("Come Fly With Me")
Two days after his surgery, blood flow remained healthy in all Sam's limbs and he had no signs of infection. He asked Jo to come see him so he could flirt with her. Later that day, one of his dopplers came up weak. Jo pulled back his bandage, which showed signs that the flap was congested. She had to open it up in his room and restore the blood flow. Despite the pain, Sam decided to watch her do this. It worked and Sam's condition stabilized. ("Ready to Run")
Four days after his surgery, Mika was reporting on his case during rounds when he interrupted and asked if they had to do that. She explained to him that it was an important part of her surgical education. Later that day, Sam had a CT angio because he had decreased pulses in his left arm. The CT angio showed a grade I aortic dissection, which Teddy said would likely resolve on its own. ("Wedding Bell Blues") Despite this, Sam's aorta fully transected. Teddy rushed him to the OR to do a thoracotomy and cross-clamp his aorta, but collapsed before she was able to do this, so Simone and Lucas stepped in to do it. ("Happily Ever After?") They opened Sam up, but he bled out and died in the OR. ("We've Only Just Begun")
Relationships[]
Romantic[]
While was in the hospital, he flirted with Jo and asked if she was single, which she said she was. ("Come Fly With Me") Two days after his surgery, he had her paged to his room with a fake reason just so he could flirt with her. She ended up coming in and out of his room throughout the day. ("Ready to Run") He continued to flirt with her as she explained that Link was a friend of hers and he didn't like her relationship with Sam. Sam said it was because Link was in love with her, though Jo didn't believe that was true. ("Happily Ever After?")

He has a nephew whom he promised to teach to ride a bike. ("Come Fly With Me")
When he was seven, his dad took him to his first professional baseball game, where the first baseman signed his cast. He cried when they eventually cut the cast off. ("Ready to Run")
