||
+ | **This decision makes season sixteen the fourth shortest season of the series, only behind season one with 9 episodes, season four with 17 episodes and season seventeen with 17 episodes. |

||
+ | *During the COVID-19 pandemic, Krista Vernoff tweeted what each of a few characters would say in response. |
||
+ | **Meredith said, "I get that you're bored. I get that you're sick of this. I get that you’re at the point where you’re just throwing the dirty dishes out the window. I get it. But I am in this hospital EVERY DAY fighting for people's LIVES while risking my own. I want to see my kids again! I want to be able to hug them! The very LEAST you can do is STAY. HOME. ...Seriously. I mean it. Stay home."<ref>https://twitter.com/KristaVernoff/status/1251397840544260096</ref> |
||
+ | **Bailey said, "What is the matter with you?? You went out into the street? Without a mask?? Without even a bandana tied around your face? What— Are you— ? Do you UNDERSTAND that you can have this disease and not have any symptoms? Do you understand that with every exhale you are potentially risking the lives of someone's mother? Someone's grandmother? Someone's father, someone's sister, someone's brother, someone's child someone's...someone? You could HAVE the VIRUS and not KNOW it! I don't care that you like to go jogging without a mask! I like to do a lot of things I can't do right now! I don't care that it fogs up your glasses! Is the mask literally killing you? No? Then put it ON."<ref>https://twitter.com/KristaVernoff/status/1251399962601992193</ref> |
||
+ | **Amelia said, "I just pushed a whole human person out of a not very large hole in my body. That human person is... he's perfect. He is love. He has redefined my entire being. The ONLY thing I want to do is curl up in bed with that tiny perfect human and hold him like my life depends on it. But I am here. I am here at the hospital because I am needed, because I am a doctor, because I know how to save lives and that obligates me to do it. It is unimaginable to me that there are people on this planet who are going out without masks, without social distancing, in "protest" risking their own lives and everyone else's lives while I am here trying to save lives instead of at home with that tiny perfect creature sleeping on my chest. It is. Unimaginable. I can't even imagine it. And I don't want to believe it."<ref>https://twitter.com/KristaVernoff/status/1251402116721082369</ref> |
||
+ | **Maggie said, "You're kidding, right? Are they REALLY THAT STUPID? What is the MATTER with people? Do they not understand that this is a virus? Do they not understand that the virus doesn't care who they are or what they want or who they voted for for president or what color hat they're wearing? The virus doesn’t care about anything. The virus will just infect you and kill you. And then it will infect and kill the people you love. Whether you believe in it or not. Do they really not get that?? Or do they just not care?"<ref>https://twitter.com/KristaVernoff/status/1251403856539312129</ref> |
||
+ | *[[Meredith Grey]] narrates all the voice overs this season with the exception for [[Love of My Life]], which was narrated by [[Richard Webber]]. |

Notes and Trivia[]
- The renewal for the show's sixteenth season was first somewhat confirmed on February 5, 2019. Karey Burke, President of ABC Entertainment, stated at a TCA session that the show was implicitly renewed for its sixteenth season when Ellen signed on for seasons 15 and 16. At the same time, she confirmed that they were in early conversations to keep Grey's going even beyond the sixteenth season. This renewal was made official on May 10, 2019.[source?]
- Together with the renewal, the addition of Chris Carmack (Atticus Lincoln), Greg Germann (Tom Koracick), and Jake Borelli (Levi Schmitt) to the main cast was announced.[source?]
- Production for this season started on July 15, 2019.[source?]
- The table read for the season premiere took place on July 25, 2019.[source?]
- A kick-off party for cast and crew took place on July 28, 2019.[source?]
- Ellen Pompeo and Giacomo Gianniotti filmed their first scene on July 29, 2019.[source?]
- This is the first season since season 10 for which ABC released promotional photos for every member of the cast.
- The season heavily features crossovers with Station 19's third season.
- As such, Barrett Doss, Miguel Sandoval, Grey Damon, and Danielle Savre make their first appearance as their Station 19 characters on Grey's Anatomy. Out of those, only Barrett makes multiple appearances.
- Jason George recurs throughout the season. Okieriete Onaodowan makes one appearance, also having appeared on the show's fifteenth season.
- Jay Hayden filmed multiple scenes for Grey's Anatomy but they always ended up being cut for time.[source?]
- Jaina Lee Ortiz and Boris Kodjoe do not appear this season but they have appeared on Grey's Anatomy before in its fourteenth and/or fifteenth season.
- On March 12, 2020, it was announced that due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, production had been shut down. This hiatus in filming came after the completion of episode 16.21 and was expected to last at least two weeks.[source?]
- On March 27, 2020, ABC announced that it would not resume production on season 16 and the finished 21st episode would act as the season's final episode.[source?]
- This decision makes season sixteen the fourth shortest season of the series, only behind season one with 9 episodes, season four with 17 episodes and season seventeen with 17 episodes.
- It also makes this the only season not to end in May.
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, Krista Vernoff tweeted what each of a few characters would say in response.
- Meredith said, "I get that you're bored. I mean it. Stay home."[2]
- Bailey said, "What is the matter with you?? No? Then put it ON."[3]
- Amelia said, "I just pushed a whole human person out of a not very large hole in my body. And I don't want to believe it."[4]
- Maggie said, "You're kidding, right? Are they REALLY THAT STUPID? What is the MATTER with people? Do they not understand that this is a virus? Do they not understand that the virus doesn't care who they are or what they want or who they voted for for president or what color hat they're wearing? The virus doesn’t care about anything. The virus will just infect you and kill you. And then it will infect and kill the people you love. Whether you believe in it or not. Do they really not get that?? Or do they just not care?"[5]
- Meredith Grey narrates all the voice overs this season with the exception for Love of My Life, which was narrated by Richard Webber.
