The second season of Private Practice premiered on October 1, 2008 and concluded on April 30, 2009. The first ten episodes were broadcast on ABC on Wednesdays at 9 PM before changing timeslots to Thursdays at 10 PM starting with the eleventh episode. The season consists of 22 episodes.


Addison Forbes Montgomery is a renowned surgeon. Having left behind Seattle Grace Hospital, a broken marriage with Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd, and her torn relationship with Mark "McSteamy" Sloan, Addison moves to Los Angeles for sunnier weather and happier possibilities. For Addison, an old friend's invitation brings her to a new city and a new life full of promise. At Oceanside Wellness Group, the doctors are dedicated pros; it's their private lives that need a little practice.


  • Addison discovers that the practice is in financial trouble. She and Sam relieve Naomi of her administrative duties and take the lead, which angers Naomi.
  • After Addison decides to put the fourth floor of the practice for lease, Charlotte leases it and starts a rival practice, Pacific Wellcare Center.
  • Cooper tries to build a secret relationship with Charlotte, even though she prefers to keep it sex only
  • Archer Montgomery, Addison's brother, is hired at Pacific Wellcare and begins a sexual relationship with Naomi.
  • Meg Porter, an old flame of Pete, comes to Los Angeles.
  • Addison begins a relationship with a police officer, Kevin Nelson.
  • Dell is tired of being taken for granted and quits his job.
  • Violet embarks in sexual relationships with both Pete and fellow psychiatrist Sheldon Wallace, resulting in a unplanned pregnancy which later nearly costs her her life.

Meanwhile, Dell, Addison and Naomi heatedly debate the pros and cons of gender reassignment surgery when their patients' newborn child is born with both male and female sex organs, and Violet and Sheldon settle some of their own issues when they co-lead a couples' therapy group.

Meanwhile, Dell copes with the absence of his daughter after his ex moves for a new job, and Sam and Addison find themselves suppressing their feelings for two very unattainable people.

Cooper struggles with a patient's mother, who is allowing her 12-year-old daughter to be sexually active. Meanwhile Pete begins dating his patient's fun and outgoing mom, causing a bit of jealousy in Violet. Sam has to take the stand during a malpractice trial for a colleague, and Addison continues to fight her feelings for a very persistent Noah.

When a pregnant woman starts to show signs of heart complications, Addison rushes her St. Ambrose where Noah is standing by to help. Pete's relationship with Lisa becomes complicated by Violet's ever-present pregnancy and Sheldon decides it's time to take a stand.

As Violet chooses between Pete and Sheldon, a grief-stricken patient poses a danger to her. Addison faces her feelings for Noah as Morgan goes into labor. Dell has concerns for his daughter when a drugged-out Heather returns to town, and Naomi must decide if it's in her best interest to stay with Oceanside Wellness or start anew at Pacific Wellcare.

The "Private Practice: The Complete Second Season" boxset was released in region 1 on September 15, 2009 by ABC Studios. On March 1, 2010 and November 2, 2009, the DVD was released in regions 2 and 4 respectively. The run time of the DVD is 946 minutes.
