The fifth season of Station 19 was ordered by ABC on May 10, 2021. It consists of 18 episodes and premiered on September 30, 2021 at 8/7c.

Summary[]

The team is on hand to save lives again. The team suffers the tragic loss of one of their own as Dean Miller dies. Ben and Miranda confront Dean’s parents and receive shocking news. A new member joins the crew. Andy is suddenly transferred to another firehouse and her life is unexpectedly changed in a way that she never thought would be possible. Maya is reprimanded for disobeying direct orders in the field and must reevaluate her professional and personal lives. The Team faces new challenges and conflicts and relationships and friendships are tested inside and outside the firehouse. A new Chief joins in the Seattle Fire Department bringing new initiatives and challenges to Station 19.

Plots[]

  • Andy is transferred to SFD Station 23 on the day of Maya and Carina's wedding. Fire Chief McCallister tells Andy that she has to stop living in her father's shadow.
  • Maya is demoted from her position as Captain to Lieutenant for transporting Zaza Delgado on the engine instead of waiting for an aid car.
  • After getting the approval of Travis, Theo and Vic continue their relationship.
  • Sean Beckett is named the new captain of SFD Station 19.
  • Andy and Sullivan divorce.
  • Theo and Travis become friends again.
  • Carina and Maya discuss expanding their family by having children.
  • Dean creates the Crisis One program.
  • Dean dies and Ben and Miranda clash with Pru's grandparents over her care.
  • Natasha Ross is the new Chief of the Seattle Fire Department, following the early retirement of Fire Chief McCallister.
  • Vic finds out she's pregnant after being electrocuted and has an abortion with Carina's help and with Theo by her side.

  • Ross shuts down Station 23 due to budget deficit, leaving all the firefighters at the station out of a job.
  • Beckett develops a drinking problem, including drinking at work, which Sullivan reports to Ross.
  • Andy is sexually assaulted by another firefighter.
  • Andy is arrested and accused of having killed Jeremy Benanti.
  • Theo is transferred to Station 19.
  • While helping Maya and Carina have a baby, Jack discovers that he has a brother named Joshua Hill.

  • Filming for the season started August 5, 2021.
  • Due to COVID-19, the holiday break was extended. Instead of resuming production on January 10, 2022, it was pushed back to January 12, 2022.
  • This is the first season not to feature Miguel Sandoval as Pruitt Herrera in any capacity as well as Jake Borelli as Levi Schmitt.

  • Producer Kiley Donovan shared in an interview that ten months will have passed since Maya and Carina's wedding when the season kicks off. During those months, "big shake-ups" have happened at the station and "the fire family is not quite intact." In the same interview, she shared insight into where the couples are when the season kicks off:
    • Maya and Carina's marriage remains "solid, an A+".
    • Andy and Sullivan's marriage is "shattered" due to Andy blaming him for Maya's demotion, and "a reconciliation looks doubtful."
    • Travis and Emmett's rekindled relationship is "more passionate than ever."
    • Vic and Theo are "as hot and heavy as they were in the finale", leaving Dean on the sidelines.
    • Jack "stands a good chance at finding someone right for him this season" after Inara left him.
