Simon Clark was a patient with metastasizing cancer.
History[]
Simon had had a stage II synovial sarcoma resected from his knee. Four years later, he was undergoing chemoradiation to treat mets in his lungs. His wife found him struggling to breathe in the nursery trying to assemble a crib. They admitted him and ordered a CT, which showed a mass in his ileum that was obstruction his bowel, likely the cause of his pain. Jo operated with the hope of resecting the tumor and reducing his pain, which would buy him more time, as his wife was 32 weeks pregnant and he was desperate to live long enough to meet his son. However, when they opened, Jo found that the tumor was too invasive, so instead of removing the tumor, she performed an ileostomy to make him more comfortable and buy him a little more time. After his surgery, Jo told Kristen that he had a month at most to live. Kristen asked them to do a c-section immediately so he could meet his son, but Jo said it wasn't safe because she was too early. Link said he'd check with Carina DeLuca, giving Kristen hope, but Carina also said no. Kristen then went to Simon and told him he needed to live to meet his son. ("I'll Cover You")
After his surgery, he started chemotherapy treatments to try to buy him enough time to meet his child. While he was getting treatment, he and Kristen did puzzles to pass the time. Catherine Fox got her treatments at the same time as his and they talked as well. When Kristen began having contractions and needed to go upstairs to be examined, Catherine sent Richard up with her so she wouldn't have to go alone since Simon couldn't go with her. ("Stronger Than Hate")
Simon continued receiving supportive care as Kristen's pregnancy continued into the final weeks. When he struggled to breathe, he asked them not to intubate him, fearing the tube would never come out, but desperate for Simon to meet their son, Kristen authorized it. A CT showed that his mets had grown and he had new ones. Kristen then made the decision to have the doctors put Simon on ECMO to buy him a little more time, even though they warned her she might later have to decide to turn off the machines. While Simon was being connected to the machines, Link brought her food and assured her she wasn't being selfish trying to get Simon to live long enough to meet their son. ("Out for Blood")
Simon was stable on ECMO when Kristen suffered a placental abruption and had to be rushed into an emergency c-section. While he was in surgery, he learned that Kristen needed the blood that had been brought for him and he said to send it to her so that she and their child would be saved. After their son was delivered, Winston brought him to Simon, who kissed him and told him hello forever before dying. ("You Are the Blood")
Relationships[]
Romantic[]
He was married to Kristen Clark until his death. His cancer was diagnosed shortly after they married.
They used to live in a two-story townhouse with an upstairs office Kristen was convinced was haunted. When she would go up there, Simon would say, "Goodbye forever." When he was diagnosed with cancer, she asked him to stop, so he started saying, "Hello forever," a habit that continued through the rest of their marriage until Simon's death. ("Out for Blood")
