“ | Our genes, which we inherit from our parents, determine who we are biologically. Our blueprint. Everything from our eye color to our height. Even our laugh. But also our diseases. Asthma, diabetes, cancers. But who you are at your core goes way beyond genes. Who you really are is the result of many, many things. How you deal with fear. Who you surround yourself with. And how you show up when it matters. | ” |
The Makings of You is the twelfth episode of the eighteenth season and the 392nd overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.
Short Summary[]
Nick whisks Meredith away to his Minnesota cabin for a romantic weekend, leaving Winston and Maggie to care for Meredith's children. Meanwhile, Amelia and Kai grow closer.
Full Summary[]
Nick and Meredith arrive at his cabin. He jokes that there is a no phone policy at the cabin, except for emergencies. Meredith is impressed and says the cabin is more amazing than he described as they exit the car. He warns her against bears, but says they aren’t inside. Meredith is finishing an email to Amelia about the FDA, then she’s done changing the world.
In the Grey Center in Minnesota, Amelia finds several researchers including Kai. She asks if she missed the part invite, and Kai says that an expensive experiment succeeded, meaning there will be more money, more people. Amelia interrupts them when she sees a new device, but Kai tells her not to touch it. They ask if Amelia has seen Meredith’s notes so they can finish the report. They share a long gaze thinking of their time together coming to an end.
Bailey and Ellis are playing hide-and-seek in the living room as Zola, Maggie and Winston eat breakfast in the kitchen. It’s clear Maggie isn’t feeling well as they discuss the sun and other stars. Winston tells her she should go lay down, but Maggie says she took flu medication, she’s going to rally and help with the kids. Winston reminds her he used to be a camp counselor, that he knows CPR and has seen every Marvel movie, and also the whole surgeon thing. Maggie says this requires a different kind of training, but he assures her he can handle this. Bailey comes in saying he can’t find Ellis, so Maggie, Winston, and Zola go off to help him.
Meredith is looking out the cabin window when Nick returns with wine. He realizes she’s still rewriting her report in her head. She explains she’s still stuck on the part explaining why they chose to break up the injection into four parts. He understands that when you work on something like this, it invades everything, your thoughts, dreams, everything. Meredith says two weeks ago she wrote out a cellular calculation on Zola’s homework, a history assignment. Nick tells her about a study he participated in about liver transplants in HIV-positive donors and recipients. It was a lot of ups and downs, flying all over the country, and he wanted to be able to turn his brain off, so every once in a while he would come to the cabin. The cabin was his first big purchase, for himself. Meredith asks if it worked, he says the first few times he was stir crazy. She guesses it’s because there were no lives to save. He had to settle into the calm. She laughs and asks what that’s like. He says it takes some getting used to, and realizes she’s not very good at this. He takes her glass as she climbs into his lap and they start making out.
Kai thinks they need to rework the way they tackle Hamilton’s bowel obstruction in their report. They are worried it reads like he was intentionally trying to hide it, which Amelia thinks is exactly what he did. Kai says he’s already been accused of pay-to-play and putting entire responsibility on him will only further discredit him just as he’s trying to expand the project. Amelia assumes Kai means they should take the blame, but Kai says they didn’t say that. Amelia says Hamilton’s primary care physician had examined and cleared him, and he had reported feeling well that morning. Kai reminds her that patients with Parkinson’s are at risk for other health conditions and thinks maybe they could have done more on their end. Amelia argues that Hamilton almost cost them the entire surgery and asks why they should lie. Kai says they aren’t, and that their goal is to further Parkinson’s research. Amelia is distracted by Kai pacing the room. She thinks that an argument can be made that due to the extreme motivation of patients seeking this experimental surgery, it requires more in-depth history and physical pre-op. Kai agrees that’s a better way of framing it. They agree it doesn’t point fingers, focuses on outcomes, and adds value to future surgeries. Kai leans in and tells Amelia that pacing works. Amelia asks if they are ready to submit, Kai thinks they are. Amelia says her flight doesn’t leave until tomorrow morning, or she could change it to today. Kai interrupts and says she could also stay and invites her to a show.
Nick and Meredith are having sex on the couch in the living room of the cabin. Suddenly the door opens and they are interrupted by Nick’s niece and her boyfriend. Everyone is embarrassed and Nick asks if they can have a minute.
Maggie and Zola are still looking for a hiding Ellis. Winston say’s she’s not in the bathroom and asks if Maggie is okay. Bailey comes downstairs and says he’s checked Ellis’ closet, but she isn’t there. Maggie wonders how she’s going to tell Meredith she lost one of her kids. Winston reminds her they didn’t lose her, they just don’t know where she is as Bailey calls for her again. Maggie says she can hear Meredith now “I always knew it was going to be you” as she lays down on the couch in the hallway. Zola announces she’s found Ellis. Winston and Maggie go to find them as Ellis rolls out from the bottom of an old dresser. Ellis asks if she won, Winston assures her she did. Bailey asks to play again, but Maggie quickly rejects that idea. Winston sends Bailey and Ellis off to get juice boxes as Zola starts pulling a box from the back on the dresser. It’s some of Ellis’ old stuff including her office name plate, which Zola asks to keep. Maggie thought Meredith had put everything into storage. While looking through it, Zola discovers an envelope with the name Margaret written on it and asks is it’s for Maggie.
