Short Summary[]

When Theo and Vic hit a relationship milestone, Vic is forced to reckon with her feelings about commitment. Meanwhile, an explosion rips apart a neighborhood and changes the lives of our firefighters forever.

Full Summary[]

Maya is digging through a drawer when Carina comes in and checks that Maya is off Friday, because she made reservations at a Burmese restaurant. Maya walks toward Carina and opens her robe, saying her shift doesn't start for half an hour. Carina says she doesn't have time because she has to go meet Jack. Maya says Jack is patient and can wait, but Carina tells her to stop talking about Jack when she's naked. Maya asks if Carina wants to give her a spanking. Carina pulls back and says she's a woman of her word and needs to go. Maya just looks at her for a moment and Carina caves, saying she only has ten minutes. Maya pulls her toward their bed and reminds her she spent a year studying the female orgasm, so ten minutes should be all she needs.

Vic is texting Diane when Theo comes in and wishes her a happy anniversary. This upsets her because in her family, if you celebrate an anniversary before being married, you break up. Theo is dubious, but Vic says they're not celebrating. They start kissing anyway and fall back on the bed.

While Travis talks to his mother on the phone, Emmett looks at Travis and Michael's wedding photo and asks Travis about moving it out of the bedroom. Travis doesn't acknowledge what he's said because he's preoccupied with his parents. Emmett is upset that Travis isn't validating his feelings.

Andy puts a bandage on Pru and tells her it's all better. Dean comes in and says the car seat is all set and thanks Andy for taking Pru to daycare. Andy says she has to earn her keep and promises to find a place soon. Dean says it's good that she's there because then he has to deal with his mother less. He has Crisis One business this morning. Pru and Andy leave and Dean calls the fire chief from Oakland.

Ben comes in and invites Jack to a cookout at their place. Joey asked if he'd come and Jack says he will. Jack's at the desk because he's waiting for Carina. Jack had an idea and she's helping him with it. Their conversation is interrupted when Ingrid Saunders comes in. She asks Ben about the plans she left with him. He hasn't had a chance to look at them. She mentions that she smelled burnt plastic in her store and asks if she's called emergency services. She didn't want to because Ben knows her and her shop. She wants him to look at it. She's a bit paranoid since the fire. Ben says that's normal and Jack asks if she's seen a therapist. A fire is a trauma, even if you don't lose anyone. Ingrid says she hasn't, but she did lose her husband, a year before the fire. He died in his sleep of carbon monoxide poisoning while she was out of town. She apologizes for bothering them and leaves.

Sullivan looks over the mockups from his photo shoot and says it looks like he's selling cologne. Ari says it's a good thing, that it'll put him on the fast track to battalion chief again. Beckett comes in and comments on them meeting in Sullivan's old office. Sullivan explains what they're doing. Ari says it's good motivation for him to work out of his old office. He doesn't want to be a grunt forever, no one does. Beckett says he actually misses it. Being captain is a lot of paperwork and whiny firefighters. But Sullivan knows that.

Diane texts Vic again, asking her to cover some Crisis One Trainings. Vic grabs a binder to check the Crisis One schedule and sees something that upsets her.

As Dean leaves a message for another shift on an empty jar of peanut butter they left, Jack tells him Carina is on her way and Ben is also going to join them. Jack asks for advice and Dean tells him not to suck. Then he says Jack has it and needs to give himself more credit. He's come so far and he did that all by himself. It's not a small thing. Vic comes in and asks Dean what's happening. Diane has asked her twice now to take on more responsibility with Crisis One and Vic though that meant Diane was leaving the program, but she just looked at the schedule and found out Dean had been taken off everything, meaning he is the one leaving. He tells her he has an offer in Oakland to set up a program like Crisis One there and he's considering taking it.

Aquino tells Andy she's the only woman at 23, which she's noticed. Someone else at the department noticed and now it's a problem. Andy says it wasn't her, but Aquino knows it was Diane Lewis, who saw what happened at the Crisis One training. He was the only Asian at every station he worked at except one and endured many jokes about that. He feels bad that he didn't notice Andy was the only woman. Being the only of anything is never fun. Now they're being sent a new recruit and he wants her to shadow Andy so she can learn the ropes. Andy jokes about being saddled with extra work, but says she's happy to show her the ropes. He introduces her to Deja Duval, who asks if she's related to Pruitt Herrera. They learned about him at the fire academy. Andy says he was her dad, which Deja says makes her a princess. Andy corrects that she's a lieutenant.

Jack tells Ben to cut Ingrid loose, but Ben says she needs help. Jack knows Ben would never cheat on his wife, but Ingrid doesn't know that. Carina comes in and asks if Ben is helping them with the clinic. Jack says he hadn't told Ben about it because he was still working up to it. Carina says he's a grown man and should work up to it faster. She gets a mug and pours herself a cup of coffee as Jack starts to tell Ben about his idea to offer medical services at the station, like a clinic. When Carina takes a sip, she says the coffee is burnt and starts to make a new pot while she and Jack explain that lower-income people are more likely to seek medical care from a fire station than a hospital because they don't trust doctors. Crisis One is for mental health, but this would be for everything else health. People will come and it'll reduce the number of calls they have to go on.

Vic rants about Den as she, Maya, and Travis work out in the gym. Travis rants about Emmett wanting to move the picture. Suddenly, Maya says her wife is mind-blowing in bed, shocking even herself, as she didn't mean to say that out loud. She continues working out. Travis continues his rant and Vic wonders if he just wasn't listening when Emmett was talking and so he only thinks his comment was out of nowhere. Maya says he listens except when he's pre-occupied with something, which he says is false. Vic challenges him, asking what she was talking about before he interrupted. He can't remember. His family is imploding. Vic says her family is imploding too: 19. She leaves in frustration.

Vic finds Dean in the locker room and says she knows why he wants to leave. Crisis One works and he wants to share it. Every city should have a program like that. But she asks where it ends, if he'll keep moving around to start more. She suggests having the cities come to him instead. He says there are some benefits to taking Pru around the country to see how other people live. Suddenly, the building shakes.

Vic and Dean run into the beanery, where they've also felt the movement. A few seconds later, the alarm rings and they get called out, leaving Carina alone in the beanery, wondering why she bothers to visit the station.

On their way to the scene, Vic and Dean continue to talk about Crisis One and expanding it. Dean asks Vic to come to Oakland with him. He wants to show Pru the country, but he doesn't want to leave Vic. Vic reminds him that he kicked her out because he said she was confusing Pru. She doesn't want him to go, but she can't go with him, which he figured. She asks if he's really leaving and he says he is.

They arrive on a street that has bene mostly destroyed by the explosion. Beckett calls Dispatch to report on the situation. He gives his team orders to start evacuating residents and get ready to start hitting the houses from above once everyone is out. He also has Ben and Sullivan set up triage for injuries. Sullivan tries to give advice, but Beckett says their backup will handle that. Their priority is evacuation. Sullivan tries again, but gets sent to triage.

Travis and Jack search a house and evacuate the residents. They have one more house to clear. Maya says she'll go with Jack while Travis leads the injured to the triage area. Travis tells Beckett those houses are clear, so he gives the order to start putting out the fires. Ben says they're getting overwhelmed at triage, so Beckett sends Travis to help. Beckett then goes to talk to Larry, who was present for the explosion. He says he was digging a trench for irrigation and he hit a gas line that wasn't on the map, which threw him and the tractor he was in. Despite this, he's only minorly injured because of the tractor he was in. Beckett then reports that there's a ruptured gas line and asks for more backup. He sends Larry to triage and notes that the situation is going to get worse. He tells Vic to go up the ladder and be ready when they get the water.

Andy shows Deja around and introduces her. She meets Theo, who is still upset about not getting to celebrate the anniversary. Andy notices something in her locker and finds a bunch of Fire Zaddy posters that Maddox put in there. Deja didn't realize she was married to Fire Zaddy. Maddox makes a sexist joke and Deja laughs as he leaves. Andy tells her she doesn't have to, but Deja says she's not like Andy. Her dad wasn't a firefighter and she's not married to Fire Zaddy. If she has to laugh at sexist jokes to get along, she will. Just then, the alarm calls them out.

Maya hits a house with a hose while Vic does the same from above. Then the water abruptly stops, which Maya says is due to the explosion taking out their water main, which she saw from above. Beckett says a block south is on a different main and before he can say it, Maya's heading down the street with a hose.

Andy coaches Deja as they ride to the scene, to make sure she's prepared. When Deja makes a snarky joke, Maddox calls her feisty, which Andy objects to, but Deja says is fine with her.

At triage, Travis tends to Aaliyah, who is pregnant and vomiting, which moves her from a yellow to a red. He hangs an IV for her. Ben radios Beckett to say they need more aid cars. Beckett says they're out on runs and there are traffic jams. Aaliyah's worried she'd going to lose her baby. Travis looks around and suggests maybe Carina can come on foot as the station is only about half a mile away. Ben says that's a good idea.

Station 23 arrives at the scene.

They restore water to the scene and Vic begins spraying again. As she works, a power line near her snaps and hits her, throwing her back on the ladder and leaving her hanging upside down unconscious. Dean sees this and yells out to her.

Dean runs to help Vic just as Theo notices she's injured. Beckett calls for an additional aid car as Dean begins climbing up to Vic. Once he reaches her, Dean lifts Vic up and gives her rescue breaths. She wakes up and gestures for them to bring the ladder down.

Carina is jumping rope in the station gym when Emmett walks in. She says it's one of the perks of loving a firefighter. He asks if Travis is around and Carina tells him they're all out on a call. She thinks being able to use the gym might be the only perk of loving a firefighter, because she's just scared all the time. Even more when they're out on a call. And she knows Emmett feels the same way. He knows how good they are and how hard they work. They manage to take it totally seriously and not seriously at all at the same time. And they love it. So he's scared all the time, but he tries to let Travis know. Carina says she's the same. Just them, her phone pings and she tells Emmett they need her at the scene. Emmett offers to go with and says they'll have to run, so it's a good thing she didn't finish her workout.

Vic is strapped to a stretcher and gets lifted off the ladder truck and carried to triage.

Sullivan says the gas line is still leaking, which is continuing to put the whole block in danger. They can't wait for the emergency response team. He can shut the valve off himself. Beckett says the valve is in an extremely hot area, too hot. Maya says a hose line in a spray formation is enough protection. She can hold it. They convince him to let them try, but he tells them to be careful.

Dean brings Vic into triage. Travis starts crying when he sees her, but immediately starts treating her. Ben tries to console Vic, saying they're going to get her on a cardiac monitor and she'll be the first one to go to Grey Sloan once they can get an aid car. As Dean goes to walk away, Vic calls out to him. She tells him he's her brother and she loves him. He says the same back to her. Theo tells Vic he was worried. She tells him she's okay and tells him to stay alive as he goes back to help. Travis asks for an ETA on an aid car.

Maya has the hose line set up and gives orders to make sure their streams are forming a solid shield. They step forward slowly. When they get to the valve, Sullivan starts trying to turn it, but it's stuck. Maya hands her hose off to Jack and steps up to help him. Together, they're able to get it. Once that's done, they back out the same way.

Travis calls again for an aid car for Vic. Ben moves Aaliyah onto her side to improve her circulation. She tells him she prays every day for her baby. She's scared of all the things that can go wrong, but she never thought the whole neighborhood would explode. Carina arrives and takes over Aaliyah's care while Vic tells Emmett she got electrocuted. She's in a good mood because she's had morphine. Travis tells Emmett he's going to move the picture. Vic tells Travis that's a lame way to say he loves Emmett. She tells him he should tell Emmett he loves him. When Emmett hears they're waiting on an aid car, he tells Travis there are two down the road stuck in a traffic jam. Travis says he loves Emmett and asks him to help carry Vic to it. Emmett says he loves Travis, too.

Fire Chief McCallister has finally arrived. Maya starts to give him an update and he interrupts her. Beckett says they need to finish evacuations. He tells Maya and Sullivan to take Jack and do the odd addresses and he'll get Miller and do the evens. McCallister says Beckett is incident commander, but Beckett says that's McCallister now, so he's boots on the ground.

Aquino joins Beckett as he goes to continue evacuating the block. They reach the first house and call out for anyone still inside. Dean goes around the back, where he sees standing water and reports that the house may have been knocked off its foundation and might be full of gas because of that. Beckett tries to warn Aquino, but it's too late and a blast throws Aquino back as he opens the door.

After the blast, the other firefighters rush to help the injured. Beckett gets up and tells them to check on Aquino, who has serious burns to his face and has been impaled through his abdomen by shrapnel. He tries to pull it out, but Andy stops him. Jack runs around the house, where he finds Dean unresponsive. Travis and Maya help treat Aquino while Jack starts CPR on Dean. Dena is loaded into an aid car and Aquino into another.

As they drive to the hospital, Ben continues CPR on Dean.

Sullivan, Maya, and Travis ride back in silence.

Ben stops for a pulse check. There's still nothing, and it's been 34 minutes.

The firefighters of station 23 cry as they drive. Deja asks if that was normal, and Theo says no. That was not a normal day. Deja tells Andy she's sorry. Andy rejects her sympathy because she says Dean is going to the hospital and he'll be okay. Pru can't be another little girl abandoned by her mother who loses her father in a fire. Maddox tells Barnes to turn the siren on, which he does despite it not being protocol.

Jack pushes more epi as Ben continues compressions. Jack offers to switch, but Ben continues.

Gas Main Explosion[]

Shortly after a large explosion that shook the station, Station 19 was called out to 647 Wright Avenue. When they arrived, they found the street in ruin. Beckett warned dispatch they'd be getting a lot of calls and then he sent the team to evacuate the houses, except Ben and Sullivan, whom he sent to set up a triage unit. Once the evacuation of the first few houses was complete, they started putting out the fire. Larry, a landscaper, told Beckett that the gas line wasn't supposed to be there. He'd hit it while digging, causing the explosion. The continued gas flow was feeding the fire. Beckett called for backup to help and Station 23 responded. While they were spraying the fire, their lines started to go dry because the explosion had taken out the water main. They had to go a few blocks to get water from another main to continue fighting the fires. At the triage tent, they treated several injuries and Aaliyah, who was 32 weeks pregnant and vomiting. Since the site was only half a mile from the station, they called Carina to come on foot to treat Aaliyah. While spraying the water from above from the ladder, Vic was electrocuted by a severed power line. Dean climbed up the ladder and gave her rescue breaths. After a moment, she regained consciousness and was taken back to the ground. Because the gas was still flowing, there was a risk of another explosion, so Sullivan wanted to go to the valve and shut it off. Beckett initially said no, but Sullivan and Maya persuaded him to let them go in and try it. With Maya's help, Sullivan was able to turn the valve. Meanwhile, Vic was stabilized in the field and then carried to an aid car that was stuck in traffic on its way to the scene. They then continued evacuating the rest of the block. Dean noticed water outside a house and advised Beckett that the house may have gas building up inside because the explosion threw it off its foundation. Before Beckett could stop him, Aquino opened the door and was blown backward. Aquino had facial burns and other trauma, including a penetrating wound to his abdomen. In the back of the house, Jack found Dean unconscious. He started CPR and then they moved him and Aquino to aid cars. Ben continued CPR as they transported Dean to the hospital.
