Vida Madera is a patient whose fetus had brain surgery.
History[]
Vida was 28 weeks pregnant after multiple miscarriages when her fetus was diagnosed with a vein of Galen malformation. Bailey, who had diagnosed the malformation, got Vida into a clinical trial started by Arizona Robbins to treat the malformation before birth in order to improve the odds as the previous treatment was unlikely to work and if it did, would lead to brain damage.
While her case was being presented, Vida said that she had changed her mind and she wouldn't have the surgery. As a low vision person, she knew that she was more likely than other mothers to have CPS called on her just for that and wanted to do what she could do protect her baby. Wanting to help Vida make an informed choice, Arizona Robbins 3D printed Vida's ultrasound, allowing her to feel her daughter's face, and then walked her through the procedure one step at a time. Vida agreed to have the surgery.
For the surgery, Vida was given a spinal block and wore headphones. There was a slight complication when the fetus started moving while Amelia was placing the coils, but Arizona was able to reposition her and inject more paralytic. The surgery was successful and Vida was told they'd monitor the rest of pregnancy and the baby would spend about a month after birth in the NICU, then they'd continue to follow them for two years.
