Zayne Johnson is a custodian at the hospital who has sickle cell disease.

History[]

Zayne was mopping a floor at the hospital when he collapsed, pulling a shelf down on top of him. Benson freed him and helped get him down to the ER, as they had to check him out before he could return to work. As they took his history, he told them he had sickle cell disease. He'd been having pain in his hip for months, but was working through it. After a CT of his abdomen, which showed serious damage to his internal organs, and MRI of his knee, which showed that his hip was completely degraded, he was told he needed a hip replacement. He didn't want to do that as he needed to get home to his son, but agreed when they said it would only get worse. He told them he was aware there was a cure for sickle cell disease, but his insurance wouldn't pay for it, though they would pay for his hip replacement and the other care he needed because of the sickle cell. After his hip surgery, Erika Desai, the CFO of an insurance company, came to him and invited him to apply for a grant they had that would cover his treatment. He was excited, but when he learned the treatment could take over a year, he said he didn't think he could do it as his son needed him and he couldn't care for his son for parts of the treatment. Richard told Zayne to think about it, see if he could work something out, and let them know.
