When she was 47, Zoey became unexpectedly pregnant after many attempts. She and her husband had given up after many years of fertility treatments that had failed, but a night on the beach with a bottle of merlot got her pregnant.

While she was pregnant, Zoey was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was informed of her options and declined to terminate the pregnancy in order to receive cancer treatment, but changed her mind briefly after speaking to Cristina and agreed to terminate. She later decided to continue the pregnancy, saying that her mother had died of cancer and there was no guarantee the treatment would work anyway. She wanted to get fat and happy instead of skinny and bald. She wanted to spend the time she had left with her husband and child. She was discharged from the hospital, happy with her decision.
